⸻ What books out first
Four things book out
well before summer arrives.
Experiencing Kangaroo Island over the summer months requires some planning. Leave the arrangements too late for visiting over December and January in particular and you may miss out all together. None of it is a reason to rush; it's a reason to settle what everything else hangs on - your transport.
The pods
The ferry crossing
Ferry space
Sealink runs the 45-minute crossing from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw. Vehicle space over the holidays is the first thing to go — often months in advance.
Flights
A season of seats
Qantas runs regular flights to connect Adelaide to Kingscote in about 45 minutes. Over the school holidays the seats thin out fast, and the fares climb as they do.
Hire cars
A small island fleet
The island runs on a limited number of hire vehicles. In peak weeks there simply aren't enough, at any price — and you'll need a car if you are flying to reach your WanderPod and explore the coast.
⸻ WHY SUMMER, HERE
Long days, warm
water, mornings that belong to the wildlife.
A salty swim before the day warms. Kangaroos in the long grass at first light. Then the slow part — the stone bath as the sun fades, a bottle of island red, and nothing else on the schedule.
Book the pod early, and you get to enjoy it — instead of spending the lead-up chasing a car and a ferry crossing.

⸻ The practical questions
When should I book for summer?
For December and January, we recommend you book months ahead. If your dates are fixed by school holidays or a milestone, the earlier the better. There's only one of each pod, and summer weeks are the first to go.
Can I hold my dates and pay over time?
Yes. Secure your dates now and spread the cost with WanderPay. Direct bookings only, subject to availability.
How do I get to the island in summer?
A 45-minute ferry crossing from Cape Jervis, or a 45-minute flight to Kingscote from Adelaide. Book your ferry crossing or flights — and a hire car — as early as the pod.
