How travel trends have changed: where are we wandering in 2021?
With international travel still off the cards for 2021, Australians are continuing to enjoy the treasures of our own backyard.
Thanks to our geographical isolation and strict border controls creating Covid-safe travel opportunities, Australia’s domestic tourism is booming. Instead of planning to jet set off to Asia, Europe or America, the big travel trends of 2021 look quite different to the cancelled trips of 2020.
Our backyard treasures
Exploring our own backyard
It’s no stretch to see road trips were the big travel trend of 2020, and it seems we are intent on continuing our favourite pastime. Tourism Australia research shows that 55% of Australians are intent on taking an interstate road trip in the next 12 months.
On the menu: everything from wide open spaces, waking up next to the ocean, exploring regional areas and small-town delights, visiting national parks and wild rainforests, and indulging in food and wine experiences.
Time for a road trip.

We want more from travel: mindful experiences and sustainability
Consumer research from Travel Australia found that 91% of travellers are doing so to open their minds and increase their knowledge, while 74% are actively seeking travel experiences that help them give back to the places they visit.
Even prior to the pandemic, Australians interest in sustainable travel was growing rapidly. In 2019, 2.2 million people said they wanted to take part in eco-tourism in the following year.
‘Demand for sustainable tourism practices is also increasing as more and more people acknowledge travel as a positive force for good. Based on Covid-19 and what we saw following the summer bushfires, we anticipate that the wellbeing of people, and our natural environment will be key considerations for many travellers in 2021.’ – Tourism Australia’s Managing Director, Phillipa Harrison.
Travel experience
The reduction in international travel has also caused people to examine the way they are travelling, with Booking.com research showing that 53% of people want to explore more sustainable ways of travelling, reducing their impact on the environment and local communities.
We want to learn more about our environment, immerse ourselves in it and contribute to protecting our diverse landscapes.
Learn. Explore.

We want to travel to regenerate
If there’s one thing the last year has taught us it just might be the value of a holiday to restore and relax. More and more we are seeking a more connected, transformative and regenerative holiday – be it a multi-day hike or long weekend in an eco-friendly cabin in a forest or by the ocean.
