The Scenic Rim by Town: Boonah, Beaudesert, Canungra and Tamborine

The Scenic Rim isn't one town with a national park attached. It's a scatter of small towns, each with a genuinely different character, spread across a region big enough that driving between all of them in a day isn't a realistic plan. Boonah, Beaudesert, Canungra and Mount Tamborine are the four larger centres, and this guide is built to tell you which one to head for on a given day.

Boonah is the closest town to Wander's own property and the region's agricultural heart: a proper grocer, a bakery, a brewery and genuine country-town character, at the doorstep of the western Rim's walking country.

Beaudesert is the Scenic Rim's largest town and its practical hub: the widest range of everyday services, a produce market and a monthly community market, and the gateway if you're coming from Brisbane's south side.

Canungra is small, and it's the town you pass through on the way to Green Mountains and Lamington National Park, worth a stop rather than a destination in its own right.

Mount Tamborine is the region's most developed tourist village: galleries, distilleries, cafes and the glow worm walks, and the furthest of the four from Wander's own property.

Boonah: close to Wander

Boonah sits at the heart of the Fassifern Valley, in Yuggera Country, within the Ugarapul clan estate specifically, and it's the gateway town for most of the Scenic Rim's western walking country: Mount French, Moogerah Peaks and, further on, Cunninghams Gap. It's a proper working town rather than a tourist strip: wide streets, genuine country-town architecture, and a main street built around what locals actually need rather than what a visitor might expect.

Blume is the standout here with regional fine dining and an ever changing seasonal menu led by Jake Stuart. Oppy's Fruit & Veg, trading out of the old Boonah Butter Factory on Railway Street, is a proper grocer rather than a produce stall: fruit and vegetables sourced locally where they can manage it, alongside cheeses, cured meats, chutneys and jams. Boonah's antique shops along the main street are worth a slow browse if that's your thing, and Boonah Brewing Co, a working craft brewery at the historic Commercial Hotel, gives the town a genuine reason to stay for an afternoon rather than just pass through.

Beaudesert: the region's hub

Beaudesert is the Scenic Rim's largest town, and it functions as the region's genuine hub rather than a destination to build a day around: the widest spread of everyday services in the region, and the most realistic base if you're arriving from Brisbane's south side via the Mount Lindesay Highway.

VK Everydays, the first realistic stop heading toward Tamborine Mountain from this direction, serves modern Australian breakfast built on seasonal, largely local produce, with a grab-and-go counter for anyone heading straight for a trailhead. For groceries, the Scenic Rim Farmers Market, despite the name, is a shop rather than a market: a fruit and vegetable grocer inside the Beaudesert Fair shopping centre, open seven days. Don't confuse it with Beaudesert Marketfest, the actual monthly community market at Dick Westerman Park, which is worth timing a visit around if the dates line up.

Canungra: the gateway to Green Mountains

Canungra is small, and its real job is as the last stop before Green Mountains: the Lamington National Park Road, a winding, scenic 38 kilometres, runs from Canungra up to O'Reilly's, and most visitors heading to that side of Lamington National Park pass straight through the township on the way.

That doesn't make it worth skipping. Canungra Hub Cafe and Deli, worth a stop on the way back if you've spent the day walking, sources from named local suppliers, Duck Creek Honey and Honeycomb, Greenlee Farm and 4Real Milk among them, and grows its own herbs, citrus and passionfruit in the courtyard you eat in. The Canungra Hotel has the feel of a genuinely functional country pub rather than one dressed up for visitors, worth a stop for a cold drink on the way through.

Mt Tamborine

Mount Tamborine, also called Tamborine Mountain, is the most developed of the four towns and the furthest from Wander's own Scenic Rim property, closer to the Gold Coast side of the region than to Boonah. It combines national park walking with a working tourism village, and it's worth treating as its own day trip rather than folding into a visit to any of the other three towns.

North Stores, on Main Street in North Tamborine, is a mixed precinct built around a real food bar, a restaurant, a ceramics studio and a handful of independent makers, and it also houses Loborn, a small-batch Australian amaro and aperitif distillery. Gallery Walk, on the mountain's northern side, has Tamborine Mountain Distillery, Queensland's oldest craft distillery, running for over three decades, open daily, alongside several food producers and a couple of solid lunch options. Cauldron Distillery, an 18-acre property making gin, whisky and Australian agave spirits, rounds out the mountain's distillery scene.

The mountain is also home to the region's best-known glow worm colony, at Curtis Falls in the Joalah section of Tamborine National Park, though the colony and the surrounding pool are closed to entry to protect it; viewing is from a boardwalk platform rather than up close.
